The President today announced his intention to nominate Judge Robert H. Bork to be Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He would succeed Associate Justice Lewis Powell.
Judge Bork has been sitting on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 1982, when he was named to that court by President Reagan. Prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeals, Judge Bork was a partner with the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis in Washington, DC. From 1977 to 1985 and from 1962 to 1973, he taught at the Yale Law School, where he was the Alexander M. Bickel professor of public law and the Chancellor Kent professor of law. From 1973 to 1977, he was Solicitor General of the United States. From 1954 until 1962, Judge Bork practiced law in Chicago, IL, with the firm of Kirkland, Ellis, Hodson, Chaffet & Masters, and in New York City with the firm of Willkie, Owen, Farr, Gallagher & Walton.
Judge Bork received his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1953. He received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1948. Judge Bork is married and has three children. He was born on March 1, 1927, in Pittsburgh, PA.
