Peace (1.4 ft; boxes 1-3)

This primary subject category contains material relating to private efforts and individual efforts, views and ideas to promote peace in the world and achieve nuclear disarmament. The material concerns talks between the United States and the Soviet Union, the administration's peace through strength position, and the establishment of a Peace Academy. There is one case file regarding Samantha Smith, the Maine child who wrote to Chairman Yuri Andropov, head of the Soviet Union, asking how he was going to avoid nuclear war.  Ms. Smith later visited the Soviet Union and received a letter from Andropov.  For a full list of our holdings on this topic see our topic guide: Smith, Samantha.
