Description

Historical Note

Grove City College and the BobJonesUniversity civil rights cases involved actions of specific universities in relation to their federal funding.  In the Grove City case, the Justice Department/Department of Education stated that Grove City, despite assiduously taking no federal funding, was still subject to Title IX application because of the basic aid provided to some of its students.  In the BobJonesUniversity case, the Justice Department threatened lifting the university’s tax exempt status due to the University’s racial policies and practices.  While not directly the same issue, both cases were considered important civil rights cases of the 1980s -involving private higher education and federal aid/policy.
