Description

Historical Note

In early 1981 the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) ministry of Pat Robertson spun off an education subsidiary, The Freedom Council. The Council's main purpose was to increase the voting involvement of evangelical Christians. CBN placed more than $8 million into the tax-exempt Council.

When The Freedom Council's founder, Pat Robertson, became a declared candidate for the 1988 Republican Presidential nomination, The Council's finances and their tax-exempt status came under great scrutiny and an Internal Revenue investigation began.

Robertson stepped away from his ordination and The Freedom Council when he declared his candidacy. But once the investigation began, the Council disbanded. As stated by The Freedom Council's President Bob Slosser, "Although he (Robertson) no longer is affiliated with the council, it has become impossible to carry on the organization's activities without its mission being misunderstood and misstated."
