This collection is available in whole for research use. In accordance with the Deed of Gift, some items may have been withdrawn from the folders. Most frequently withdrawn material is national security classified material, personal privacy, protection of the President, etc.
Biography
Walker was born in Bryan, Texas in 1937. He earned a degree in political sciences from the University of Arizona, then went on to serve as an officer in the United States Army in Okinawa, Japan. Walker served as the first Director of the White House Office of Presidential Advance for President Nixon. Walker then served in the Nixon Administration in the Office of Presidential Advance, and later as Director of the National Park Service.
Ronald Walker was Chairman of the 1984 Republican National Convention and Director of the 1985 Presidential Inaugural Committee. Walker went on to become a senior partner at Korn/Ferry International. He was also President of the Richard Nixon Foundation, and is currently the Chairman of the Board of the Nixon Foundation. In 2009, he became the President of the Richard Nixon Foundation at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and in 2010; he became the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Nixon Foundation.
Ronald Walker donated the following material to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The initial acquisition arrived at the library in November of 1999 and a later accessions arrived 06/18/2014
Collection Description
This material consists mostly of newspaper articles, papers, information, and ephemera regarding the 1984 Republican National Convention; the re-election campaign for President Ronald Reagan; and the subsequent Inauguration. A small amount of material for the 1980 Presidential Campaign is included as well as material considered post-presidential.
This collection consists of five series, Series I: Republican National Convention, 1980, Series II: Campaign, 1980, Series III: Republican National Convention, 1984, Series IV: Campaign, 1984, and Series V: Subject File. Four objects have been transferred to Audio/Visual. A significant portion of this collection was also transferred to Books. The newspaper issues can be found in oversize attachment boxes, and the objects from the Republican National Convention in 1984 are found in another oversize attachment box.
This series consists of a printed copy of Ronald Reagan’s official acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Detroit, Michigan on July 17, 1980.
This series consists of materials related to the 1980 campaign effort. It consists of the Advance Staff Manual, including information such as Reagan’s calendar; campaign stops information; contact information for those on staff; and a list of the staff by region. It also contains drafted responses for certain issues such as the budget; the American economy; civil rights; social security; foreign aid; and more. The series also includes news updates on campaign progress from the Los Angeles Times and the Reagan Bush Committee, as well as full issues from Newsweek, Time, and US News & World Report.. The series is arranged alphabetically.
This series consists of materials and objects from the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. Included are news clips documenting the convention from newspapers in the Dallas area; one single sheet from the First Monday news magazine; and full issues from Newsweek, Time, US News & World Report, New York Times, Washington Post, and more. The rest of the series contains information and objects from the convention such as official guidebooks and information packets, a notepad, stickers and tickets, two VHS tapes of the Prayer Breakfast, and the schedule of events. This series is arranged alphabetically.
This series consists of one folder, which is a registration survey and information regarding the campaign mailed from Americans to Re-Elect President Reagan. It contains full issues from USA Today, Newsweek, Time, US News & World Report, and The Washington Post. The other folder contains a small pamphlet about Ronald Reagan’s success.
This series contains material pertaining to the planning and executing of the 1985 Inauguration Gala, which Walker served as chair of the committee. The series contains Walker’s personal calendars as well as drafts of the Bushs’ and the Reagan’s calendars. It also contains memos regarding the Gala, many of which are addressed to Frank Sinatra who hosted the Gala. There are lists of possible performers, maps of the area in which the Gala was held, lists of the advertisers who purchased airtime, and handwritten notes regarding the performers and advertisers. Included are full issues of newspapers and magazines that detailed the event, including USA Today, The Washington Star, The Washington Post, The Sun, and The New York Times, This series is arranged alphabetically..
This series consists of a small sample of newspapers and publications from 1976 to 2004. The majority of the newspapers cover the 1984 Republican National Convention held in Dallas, Texas with a single issue of the Arizona Daily Star, dated 06/11/2004. This series also contains some inauguration materials from George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. Included are also full issues of magazine and newspaper articles that outline Ronald Reagan’s national and foreign policy plans, predictions for what policies he will pursue, Soviet-US relations, the attempted assassination of Reagan, his travels abroad, and more. They come from magazines and newspapers such as LIFE, National Journal, Business Week, People, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Dallas Morning News, The Dallas Times Herald, and more. This series is sorted alphabetically by newspaper title, then chronologically.
