Mrs. Shirley Perry was a Massachusetts Republican delegate to the 1980 Republican Convention held in Detroit, MI in July 1980. In addition she was the Chairperson of the John Anderson for President Campaign for the 6th Congressional District of Massachusetts. As a delegate she was pledged to John Anderson.

During the Massachusetts primary Mrs. Perry hosted a coffee for the Illinois Congressman during his tour of the North Shore neighborhood of Beverly, Massachusetts.

Collection Description

This collection consists primarily of newspaper clippings regarding the Republican primary campaign of John Anderson for the 1980 presidential election. Mr. Anderson did not receive the nomination and he chose to run as an Independent. He participated in a presidential debate with just Ronald Reagan, the Republican candidate on September 21, 1980. He is widely believed to have done well and “won” the debate. Anderson finished the race with just slightly under 7% of the popular vote. He has continued his work as a political reformer.

Included in the collection is Mrs. Perry’s material from the 1980 Detroit, MI Republican Convention; the struggle over including support for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in the Republican platform; and material on Massachusetts elections, the 1979-80 primaries and the 1980 general elections.

The collection has been arranged into five series: SERIES I: John Anderson Campaign Material, 1979-1984; SERIES II: Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Material, 1980; SERIES III: Republican National Convention, Detroit, MI, July 1980; SERIES IV: Massachusetts Republican Party Materials; SERIES V: Election Materials, 1979-1980.

SERIES I: JOHN ANDERSON CAMPAIGN MATERIAL (0.3 l.ft.; Box 1)

This series consists of material regarding the John Anderson Campaign local organization in Massachusetts and his national campaign for the President in 1980. Material includes scheduling, planning and policy information for the local Anderson organization and includes notes by Perry.

Also included are news clippings on the Anderson campaign and information about Anderson and his further political actions, including a possible run for the presidency in 1984.

SERIES II: EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT (ERA) MATERIAL (3 folders, Box 1)

This series consists of material regarding the fight to keep support of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) as part of the Republican platform at the 1980 convention. The material includes pamphlets; a call for demonstrations in Detroit at the Republic Convention and news clippings.

SERIES III: REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION, DETROIT, MI, JULY 1980 (0.6 l.ft.; Box 1-3)

This series consists of material regarding the Republican National Convention held in Detroit, Michigan, July 14-17, 1980. Material includes platform debates; issues coming before the platform; notes from Mrs. Perry; rolls of delegates, schedules and programs for the Convention; information on the selection and preparation of the Massachusetts delegation; and tourism information about Detroit and Michigan.

SERIES IV: MASSACHUSETTS REPUBLICAN PARTY MATERIAL (0.1 l.ft; Box 3)

This series consists of material regarding Massachusetts Republican candidates; surveys by the Party; schedules for the March 4, 1980 Presidential primary and vote tallies for the primary.

SERIES V: ELECTION MATERIALS, 1979-1980 (0.2 l.ft.; Box 3)

This series consists of material regarding the 1980 general election. The material within this series is entirely news clippings and magazines.
