Historical and Scope Note

Mr. Bighinatti spent his entire working career with the American Red Cross and was an expert in disaster relief. He is most well-known for negotiating the release of the “Bay of Pigs” invaders stranded in Cuba and for attempts to bring food and attention to U.S. Prisoners of War during the Vietnam War. This finding aid also includes material re: the National Board of the U.S. Emergency Food and Shelter Program (FEMA) and the U.S. Aid Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid.
